As a kind of supplement to our last post about the guidelines and health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet, we're outlining in this post some easy substitutions and tricks you can incorporate into your existing diet to improve your overall health and wellbeing.  There are several simple subsitutions that pack a big punch, so try one out for yourself!
  • Replace butter with with healthy fats like olive oil and canola oil.
    • Olive oil is a classic of the Mediterranean Diet, with some even regarding it as a magical food.  An easy and yummy substitution!
  • Replace salt with herbs and spices.
    • Getting farmiliarized with all the flavors of herbs out there is a great way to enhance the flavor of your meals, while also cutting down on the extra sodium from our salt-heavy American style of preparing food.
  • Cutting down on red meat.
    • The Mediterranean Diet puts more of a focus on fish and poultry and less on protein in general.  Eating red meat just a few times a month  is recommended.
  • Incorporating the occasional glass of red wine.
    • A burden, we know, but a glass of red wine provides some health benefits and is most definitely a (fun!) part of this diet.
  • Excercise!
    • Always a good idea!
  • Enjoying meals with family and friends.
    • Embracing the cultural side of the Mediterranean Diet, Europeans often emphasize the value of spending meals with loved ones and enjoying those happy moments while eating.
